Fall 2014 Season – Week 1 Report: Brooklyn Rugby starts season with two wins

Brooklyn Rugby Club kicked off its 2014 campaign with wins for both the men’s and women’s teams this weekend. The men opened the season with a 36-0 victory over Suffolk, while the women earned a decisive 40-22 win against Morris.

The Brooklyn men started strong with first half tries by Gedas Monginas, Craig Mackenzie, John Gearity, Toby Tornay, and Michael Reilly. Gennaro Anzalone converted two of the conversions, finishing 2 from 4 on the day.

Brooklyn added a sixth try in the second half when Robert Roche touched down in the 70th minute, followed by a successful conversion by Simon Fong.

The women earned an equally decisive victory over a strong Morris side. Amit Aharon, in her first game with Brooklyn, scored twice and Erika Hernandez added a pair of tries.

Natalia Szymanski and Julie Freese both scored as well for Brooklyn. Kyla Maxwell made two conversions for Brooklyn while sharing the kicking duties with Erika Hernandez, who added three successful conversions on the day.

The men will next take on Rockaway on Saturday, September 13, at 1 p.m. at Fort Tilden in Rockaway, New York while the women will travel to Connecticut for a matchup with Hartford at 1 p.m. For our full schedule, click here.
